The Brief

Sometimes we get involved with something other than office refurbishments, this is always an exciting opportunity as adopting our methods to something different is always an exciting and rewarding experience. This individual design & build project was commissioned by The Lord Mayor of London. Our brief was to design a café and toilet area on Trafalgar Square. By working very closely with the client at the early stages and the main contractor meant that we could agree the design reasonably quickly and solve any problems which could arise from such a detailed project.

The Rest Rooms?

Our designers went to work on this creating a unique proposal that would stand the test of time.

The toilet facility was split into male and female sections and a DDA compliant w/c was also separate. All materials needed to be hardwearing and practical, but it had to be up date in it’s’ appearance and feel. Other consideration were easy to clean and the facility had to be DDA compliant in it’s’ entirety. A lot of materials were considered, but it was decided due to the high capacity of this space that stainless steel would be the main material finish. This material was used due to its resilient and modern visual impact. All stainless steel panels were bespoke and fitted with zero tolerance something which was a little bit of a challenge.

The Café Area.

The café area had more of a design element and due to the lack of natural light, we introduced illuminated coloured glass walls down lighters and mirrors to make the area feel as light and as spacious as possible. A light honed (none slip) granite floor with off white coloured hardwearing furniture, was another consideration when we designing the space. By working very closely with Costa Coffee we came up with a solution for their servery and display. Materials for this included stainless steel access panels and a black marble top added to a great sellection of base build materials.

Once the concepts had been approved, we provided a detailed design for the construction team and external contractors. Particular attention was given to the finishes, lighting, robust details and bespoke items such as the sinks in the toilet areas, bespoke furniture doors, servery and display.

We worked very closely with all construction teams on this project over a 5 month period making sure that all challenges were resolved without delay.
